Well, it fell into the ditch … again.
House Speaker Johnson postponed it again. Once again, there weren’t enough Republican votes to pass it.
As Farmers Union reports, here are some of the items that are holding it up:
- allowing the year-long sale of E15
- limiting pesticide companies’ liability from lawsuit
- reinstating mandatory country-of-origin labeling for bee
- removing a preemption of California’s Proposition 12 on animal housing standards from the farm bill
- addressing cuts to nutrition programs that were included in the “skinny” farm bill passed in the 2025 reconciliation bill
Republicans have held up passage of a Farm Bill since 2018, but Jerry Hagstrom, author of The Hagstrom Report, says it is still possible the House may vote later tonight. We’ll see.
If the House does, then it is likely some of the points above will be scrapped. The one I particularly oppose is #2. The proof is in the pudding, and in this case, that “pudding” related to cancer rates. I see no reason pesticide companies should be protected.
Iran war costs are sailing some where between $25 and $35 billion dollars so far. The expectation is that Trump will want to take the money out of health care and feeding programs. This would be on top of the about 20% that Trump’s ONE BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL already gobbled up … so see #5
#1 will affect clean air… when summer heat us upon us, E15 fumes fan the problem
